Currently based in Sydney, Chrissy Lau is an English-born illustrator known for her beautiful designs and delicately detailed work. Her most recent clients include Samsung and the Royal Australian Mint who commissioned her to design the Year of the Snake 2013 prestige limited edition coin. And FYI - Chrissy is completely self-taught and illustrating isn't even her full-time job. She really is nothing short of amazing.
What is the most important life lesson you've learnt so far?
You should follow your dreams even if you are scared because if you have a special talent/skill and want to make it your career you'll succeed. If you don't pursue it due to fear somehow your calling will come and you'll have no choice but to follow your dream. I watched Searching for Sugar Man recently which illustrates my point very well. This documentary blew my mind. If you watch one film this year, let it be this. I also recently put in my resignation and will go full time into illustration after spending 11 years illustrating in the evenings whilst juggling full time jobs.
What significance do you think International Women's Day holds?
The UN theme for International Women's Day 2013 is "A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women," - so I feel strongly about this, in fact violence shouldn't exist at all, so although it is for a cause for Women I personally think it doesn't matter what gender you are, no one should have to suffer.
If you could trade places with any other woman for a day, who would it be?
I would love to trade places with artist Yayoi Kusama - she wakes up every day from her home in the mental asylum and toddles down the road to her studio where she paints all day long. She paints beautiful patterns that are so playful and fun.I would love to be in her shoes for the day to experience her decades of memories and experiences as an artist. I've only been illustrating for a fraction of the time so it would be great to feel her success.
