According to yourhoroscope.com, those born underneath the astrological sign of Taurus tend to seek creative outlets, and then flourish when given a paintbrush or something of that sort. I've never really been one to believe in horoscopes or anything remotely related (note: this doesn't stop me from reading my own horoscope nearly every week and praying this is the month I meet my soulmate) but when it comes to the photography of 21-year old Taurus - Aysha Banos, her models are captured lounging languidly with an obvious artistic flair. Having been interested in photography for most of her life, Aysha has definitely had time to perfect her skills and it clearly shows; from a recent shoot with Cory Kennedy to a fashion editorial for Ben Trovato. I had the chance to speak with Aysha about living in New York and the pouty Lindsey Wixson. Check it out below!
What first sparked your interest in photography?
I have had a camera in my hand from the age of 4, though it was around the age of 12 when I decided that I wanted to be a photographer.
Has social media and networking helped (or hindered) you in any way?
Yes, of course! Social media, being such a big part of our world nowadays, has introduced me to so many great people that I continue to work with who have also become good friends of mine.
What do you think sets you apart from other young photographers out there?
What sets me apart is the fact that I have been interested in film and photography for most of my life. Seventeen years of continuously having some type of camera in my hand is a long time! Also, the passion I have for photography burns so hot and deep within in me that in the end I know that's the biggest difference between me and some other photographers, along with the fact that I have been using only 35mm and medium format film for the past 2 years.
Are you inspired by any particular films? Art? Literature?
I do get inspired by films and art, but I am always most inspired by interesting locations along with my own personal experiences. Every woman I shoot, I see some part of myself in, so I always strive to have a large part of inner feelings and self in each photograph.
Who would you shoot and who would you select to style your dream editorial?
My dream editorial would consist of shooting Lindsey Winxson. I met her during S/S 2013 Fashion Week and got a great polaroid of her but I'd still love to shoot a full spread. To style the shoot, I would shoot with my good friend and muse Philip Gomez. We have been working together consistently for some time now and he always brings out the best photographer within me.
When there isn't a camera in your hand, what are you doing?
When I am not shooting, I am either scanning negatives or retouching. Even without a camera in my hand, photography still consumes much of my life but in the end, the final product is always worth the time, work and dedication.
What's the best thing about living and working in New York?
The best thing about living and working in New York is the access to great connections and companies. Having such a large and efficient industry filled with modelling agencies, magazines and designers, it makes it easy to meet people in the industry one-on-one. It's good for the people you work with to get a sense of who you are, this has led me to meet and also befriend some really wonderful people.
And finally, where would you ultimately like to end up?
Ultimately, I want to end up being successful in the field and signed with an agency. I'd love to get the opportunity to travel and see the world, along with being well respected by others in the industry.
